This study explored the role of intertextuality in Marcela Serrano’s La Llorona and Khalid Al-Mahdi’s An-naddāha, utilizing a comparative analytical approach inherent to comparative literature. The significance of the study lies in the technical and artistic value of the novels, along with their cultural relevance to Latin America and North Africa in general, and Chile and Egypt in particular. Drawing on Bakhtin’s dialogism, further developed by Julia Kristeva and others under the term intertextuality, the study concluded that the legend played a crucial role as the starting point and a source of inspiration in both examined novels. However, Serrano’s work explicitly highlighted its association with the legend from the beginning, granting readers the freedom to explore interconnected aspects. In contrast, Al-Mahdi’s narrative and the Egyptian approach to the legend are closely woven, involving characters, settings, and events from start to finish. Consequently, both novels aim to expose corruption within uneducated and impoverished societies, while also presenting a positive portrayal of women, with Serrano’s novel placing particular emphasis on this theme.
