This paper explores the connection between perception and language in two distinct intellectual contexts: modern cognitive linguistics and old Arabic linguistic thought. It achieves this by analyzing Ibn Jinni's statements on al-majāz (allegory) through the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) framework. The main objective is to reveal the frameworks used in Arabic linguistic thought to understand the interaction of perception and language. Specific goals include clarifying Ibn Jinni's approach to truth and al-majāz, understanding the underlying conceptual foundations of his treatment of al-majāz, categorizing al-majāz examples in Ibn Jinni's work, and identifying Ibn Jinni's evidence supporting the idea that language primarily relies on al-majāz. This study compares Ibn Jinni's statements with those of CMT. A key conclusion is that conceptual metaphor doesn't involve using words from one domain to describe another; instead, it entails expressing something using our mental conceptions of something else. While this aligns with the intent of Lakoff and Johnson (1980), Ibn Jinni's approach introduces an element of indirectness and ambiguity. Nevertheless, there are other noteworthy parallels between Ibn Jinni's statements, examples, and CMT. The study has revealed several additional findings.
