This paper examines the dynamics of social change within Chinese society and the concurrent evolution of modern technology, with a particular focus on the profound implications of social media on Chinese culture. Additionally, it investigates how these societal transformations find expression in literary works, which often depict a populace rendered passive, akin to indifferent spectators merely echoing the news they encounter. The chosen literary work for this study is Liu Zhenyun's 2017 novel The Children of the Guzzling Era, which provides a vivid portrayal of shifting social landscapes in China, notably the pervasive spread of corruption across diverse urban and rural segments. Furthermore, the novel offers insights into the pervasive role and influence of social media in everyday life. This paper undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the societal variables at play and their repercussions on Chinese literature. It also provides a concise overview of the author's background and significant literary contributions before conducting a thorough examination of the novel's content, characters, and linguistic discourse.
