The present study examines the linguistic analysis, particularly the onomastic aspects, of the proper names used by Calvino in the Palermitan fairy tales (numbers 147-165 in Italian Fairy Tales). These tales are Italian transcriptions of the Sicilian dialect, one of the two dialects (the other being Tuscan) from which Calvino derived richer Italian versions of fairy tales. The study begins with an introduction that defines onomastics, explores its two branches (toponymy and anthroponymy), presents branch-specific terminology, and discusses the semantic value of proper names. The main part of the study involves a careful analysis of the fairy tales (the corpus) to identify all the proper names used, examine the various types of onomastic formation employed, and categorize them accordingly. Finally, the analysis focuses on the etymological origins, formation types, and onomastic function of these names within the corpus. Additionally, the study aims to offer Italian readers outside of Palermo and Italian speakers beyond the peninsula a textual roadmap through an onomastic analysis of the protagonist names. This analysis becomes crucial when encountering ambiguous meanings or a lack of onomastic transparency in the proper names.
