This paper explores the genre of magical realism in literature, providing a definition and origin of magical realism while delving into its historical context. Initially emerging in Latin America before spreading to Europe and eventually reaching China, magical realism serves as the focus of this paper. The chosen model is Chen Zhongshi's novel, The White Deer Plain. In this work, the Chinese author skillfully employs the techniques of magical realism to depict the realities of Chinese society, emphasizing the stark contrasts between traditional culture, Confucian ethics, and the modern era. The narrative unfolds over a span of 50 years, chronicling the grievances and intricate relationships of the Bai and Liu families residing in BailuVillage, located in the eastern outskirts of Xi'an City. Notably, The White Deer Plain attained the fourth position in the Mao Dun Literature Prize in 1997. Furthermore, this paper examines the employment of magical realism techniques in the novel, explores the incorporation of magical elements within the story, analyzes the utilization of magical color in characterization, and ultimately uncovers the distinctive plot structure that highlights the beauty of magical realism in portraying reality.
